Celebrate Tacoma Arts Month
In 2018 and 2019, Collateral editors Jenny L. Miller and Abby E. Murray, along with Spanish translators Kendall Burch, Sonia Hemming, Iris Parada, and Alex Peck, offered six-week poetry workshop series at the Selma R. Carson Home in Pierce County, WA.
The Selma Carson Home holds detained, undocumented youth aged 13-17 as they await immigration proceedings. Their daily lives are high-stress, with deportation and transfers looming. And yet—they are children, athletes, artists, siblings, thinkers, jokers, and learners. They take on challenges with courage. Many of the poems created during these workshops are first attempts not only in poetry, but in writing. The impact of violence in these poets’ lives is clear, but so are their voices and stories.
In lieu of our 2020 workshops, which are cancelled due to COVID, Collateral is publishing an anthology, corre y corre sin detenerte / run and run without stopping, with selected poems created during these workshops.
In honor of Tacoma Arts Month, we are making a free download of corre y corre sin detenerte. See below.
On October 20th, Collateral will release a limited print edition of the anthology for $10, with 100% of proceeds benefitting Tacoma organizations that serve refugees and immigrants. (Excludes $2 shipping/handling.) Shipping within Pierce County only will be available until October 25th, when shipping anywhere in the U.S. opens.
These poems are published with permission from the poets, who are recognized by first initial only due to safety concerns. The cover is designed by Ryan W. Bradley, and features a commissioned drawing from Angelina Cruz, a high school student in Pierce County.
